EC | Exceptional Children

Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are developed for students who are identified and eligible for the Exceptional Children’s (EC) program, and are receiving special education services. The Exceptional Children's Referral Process is implemented and monitored by the EC Coordinator, with help from the EC teacher assigned to the student’s team. Referral, evaluation, identification, and Exceptional Children services are provided as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and the North Carolina Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities.

Evergreen’s Exceptional Children’s Program includes:

  • Coordinator of EC and 504 Program Services Coordinator

  • 5 Exceptional Children (EC) Teachers

  • Speech-Language Pathologist

  • 3 EC Associate Teachers

One of our EC teachers and our Speech-language Pathologist are certified to provide neurofeedback treatment to students with learning or attention difficulty. Additionally, we contract with professionals to provide psychological evaluations, counseling services, vision services, hard of hearing services, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

New students

When a student enrolls or transfers into Evergreen with an Individual Education Plan (IEP), Evergreen’s EC and 504 Coordinator will request the student’s record from their previous school and will determine if the records are complete. Evergreen’s EC staff will provide services included on the student’s current IEP.

Dispute Resolution

Concerns for the education of students with special needs can be addressed following Evergreen's Problem Solving Philosophy and Grievance Procedure, which can be found in our Community Handbook. If the concerns are not resolved with satisfaction or a parent wants EC dispute resolution information, the information can be found on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s website.

Child Find

Evergreen Community Charter School implements the Child Find process to:

  • Locate and identify children ages birth to 21 years with disabilities who are in need of special education services and related services.

  • Inform parents and/or guardians of the services available from the local school system and other state and community agencies.

Evergreen follows all state and federal regulations governing locating, identifying, and evaluating children with disabilities who are in need of special education services and related services. This effort includes highly mobile children with disabilities such as a migrant and homeless children. It also includes those who may be thought to have a disability and who could potentially benefit from special education, despite advancing from grade to grade at a standard rate.

Evergreen informs parents and guardians of the Child Find Process, and of the services available from Evergreen Community Charter School, local school systems, and other state and community agencies. The EC and 504 Program Coordinator provides support with communication between home, school, and community services.
