Exhibition Nights

March 27 - 1/3/5/7 & 8
March 28 - K/2/4/6

Our students have worked very hard to prepare for this evening and they deserve our utmost attention on Exhibition Night. Be sure to ask about the Guiding Questions and Learning Targets of the expedition. Inquire how students critiqued, revised, and reflected on their work. Ask about service projects, community guests, and fieldwork that led up to this celebration. And most of all appreciate all the efforts—students’, teachers’ and your own—that went into this extravaganza of learning. Show your pride in this amazing educational adventure!

Doors to the classrooms will be open at 5:30 for parents to visit classrooms. Please plan to complete your classroom visits by 6:30 PM so that teachers and staff can go home to their families!

Classroom Notes for Each Night

March 27 - 1/3/5/7 & 8

First Grade: Tools We Use - Come and enjoy the work of our budding scientists! Discover how simple machines lighten our workload and how magnets, balance, forces, friction and gravity affect our everyday lives. Student scientists are excited to teach you how everyday tools make our lives easier. We welcome you to learn about physics with our fabulous first graders!

Third Grade:  Our Place in Space and Rooted in Community - 3rd graders will be showcasing their Scholastic Magazines they wrote about climate change. Parents will be invited to read them and answer the corresponding questions. Also on display will be the students’ “Tree Ring Life Story” artwork and their “My Communities Flipbook”. Parents are encouraged to ask their child(ren) about what communities they are a part of and to share significant moments in their lives that have shaped them to be the person they are today.

Fifth Grade: Our History - This year, our fifth graders are continuing the tradition of exhibiting their U.S. History Eyewitness Accounts. We began this project by researching different events in U.S. History. Each student chose a topic that interested them most. After extensive research and note-taking, we embarked on creating a historical fiction story that leads the reader through each student’s chosen event. Along with a captivating story from our history, students have designed and created an artifact that represents their topic. Math and science studies will be represented by force & motion activities with a Force & Motion Carnival!

Seventh grade:  Global Citizenship

7th grade is deep into their global citizens expedition!  This week we held the global summit-Solutions for Living with Climate Change.  Please come to the multipurpose room to see highlights from the summit, each student’s diplomatic notebook (compilation of research and work from all classes), redraw the world posters from math, carbon cycle posters from EE, and more!  Be sure to ask students about their country and the experience at today’s summit.

All 7th grade work will be in the multipurpose room in the modular behind the middle school building.

Eighth grade: Self, Community, Connection, Beyond Visit the downstairs middle school hallway to take a tour of the work 8th grade students have completed.  You will see creative displays of ecological relationships; robots built of spheres, cylinders, & cones; a citizen’s guide for Buncombe County & NC residents; original artifacts from the perspective of an American from the early 1800s; student writing & research; and more!

March 28 - K/2/4/6

Kindergarten: Helping Hands, Helping Hearts. How do workers help us in the community? What is a community? Kindergarteners will be dressed as a community worker they interviewed, with an artistic representation of their workplace and research they have completed on display. Come grab a steering wheel and explore all of the workers who work in our very own classroom community!

Second Grade: Whatever the Weather - How are clouds formed?  What are the most common types of clouds? What tools does a meteorologist use to measure the weather? How is an anemometer used?  Come and walk through our weather world and let our second grade experts enlighten you with their research knowledge.  Within the two classrooms you will find meteorologists who can explain storms, wind, clouds, weather measurements and prediction.  Don’t forget to stop and watch the second graders on our very own Weather Channel, WECCS!

Fourth Grade:  How have people, events, and developments brought about changes in North Carolina?  How have the values and beliefs of different indigenous and racial groups contributed to the development of North Carolina?  Find out as you travel through the fourth grade classrooms to experience the journey that fourth graders have taken throughout their Humans of North Carolina expedition.  Fourth graders will share how they have investigated primary sources, deeply studied literature, and participated in fieldwork to help them answer these important guiding questions.  Fourth graders have created “I am From” poems as a way to discover and share their own unique identities.

Sixth Grade:  In the science classroom, students have just completed an expedition called Earth and Beyond. They have studied what makes a planet habitable and compared characteristics of all the planets in our solar system. Did you know that humans have the potential to live on Mars? Through challenging research, students learned how to make this happen.  Come check out the Mars Colonies they’ve designed and built in Minecraft!

In the social studies classroom, students have been learning about ancient civilizations. They have also learned what it is like to be a teacher by designing and teaching a lesson on one specific civilization. Come and check out the process they went through to be a 6th grade teacher! They will also have their written Hero’s Journey stories to share.

Stop by Hunter’s Zen Den and see why it’s a favorite place to take a time out from the classroom, when needed.

Subtle Acts Of Exclusion, Or Microaggressions, And The Real Toll Of Unconscious Bias

As we strive to become a school where everyone can enjoy a sense of not just welcoming, but belonging, we need to reckon with the subtle acts of exclusion that are commonly called, microaggressions. These subtle acts are often unintentional, but their impacts are real and lasting.

Did you know that children are more observant than adults?

Research shows that children tend to distribute their attention broadly, while adults use selective attention to focus on information they believe is most important. Something as routine as having the news on in the background can draw in a child’s attention and it is becoming increasingly easier for children to be exposed to the media through various platforms. As we know, much of the recent news in the media is discussing the war between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, and the civil unrest in Haiti. The images and information surrounding these topics may contribute to children experiencing emotions that are more intensely unpleasant; emotions such as fear, confusion, grief, anxiety, and stress. Many parents are struggling while guiding discussion, engaging in conversations, and responding to children’s questions about this situation that may be tough to navigate. One way to initiate conversation about the war, or wars, and violence in general, is by asking what they know. This can create a safe space for your child to ask the questions they have about the situation as well as assess what they have heard so far. Keep things simple and straightforward. Clinical psychologists suggest that steering clear of giving too much information about the subject and focusing more on your child’s emotions is a helpful way to inform and meet your child where they are. Keep in mind that the length and depth of the questions and conversation your child may discuss is influenced by their age. You may not have all the answers to these questions they may be asking, but simply discussing their emotions and providing support can lead to a better outcome for your child.

It’s National Sleep Awareness Week!

As a new parent I have found myself thinking about sleep a LOT–mostly because I miss it! I learned quickly that the well-being and overall function of our household can rely heavily on being thoughtful and intentional about our sleep. Can you relate? My guess is that you can–at least on some level–even if you don’t have a baby at home! From time spent reading and researching all the guidelines for how to optimize sleep for me, my partner, and our little one, I’ve learned a lot about the science behind *why* sleep is so important. In a nutshell: when we are well rested we are better communicators & problem solvers; we have more patience, resilience, and perseverance; and overall we have more physical, mental, and emotional energy to take care of ourselves, our responsibilities, and be in harmonious community with others.

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) uses this week each year to emphasize the evidence-based connection between sleep and good health, offering an annual opportunity to look more closely at our personal sleep habits so we can make healthy changes where needed. The Peer Education Project and The Mental Health Foundation created this Parent/Caregiver Guide that offers a glimpse into the many ways that sleep impacts our mental health, while these articles from The Mayo Clinic  and Kid's Health highlight important sleep needs and considerations for children at each developmental stage. If you’re curious about where to start with making changes to your own bedtime routine, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has a whole page dedicated to Healthy Sleep Habits.

Sweet Dreams!

Evergreen School # 10713

March 7th, 2024

Hi Evergreen,

Have you seen the amazing Tourney of the Hoops trophies in the office? The kids have been oohing and aahing over them all week. We are excited to share several events with you this month and we hope you can join us: coming up soon, the Tourney of the Hoops is replacing our Tree Trot fundraiser this year and the kids’ excitement is palpable. We need your help to make this day a success!

Recently, Planet Money did a piece about school fundraisers. Their reporter followed a school’s fundraising journey for a full year, watched outside companies come in to run corporate fundraisers, and wondered:

Why do schools turn kids into little salespeople? Why do we let companies come in like this and dangle prizes in front of students?
— Sarah Gonzalez, Planet Money

We used to be one of those schools. Our students actually made a presentation to the board contending that these fundraisers did not really align with our school values. We had to agree. It made us rethink the way we do fundraisers.

We want your donations to go to the school, not to “Mr. Cheesecake”. Doing things a little differently strengthens our kids intrinsic motivation. Yes, we still have incentives but they are experiential, not material.

Tomorrow we will have a short pep rally. No one will be chanting, "Big Money"! But we will be encouraging your students to activate and share their pledge pages, because the need stands. Because, the reality is, we do NEED your support to make our school run. So, as you see these requests coming in over the next week, consider donating just a teeny little bit more in support of doing things a little differently!

Right on the heels of the Tourney, we’ll be hosting all of you on the evenings of March 27th (1, 3, 5, 7/8) and 28th (K, 2, 4, 6) for our spring Exhibition Nights. Students are preparing to share their expedition work and learning with you. Family friendly food will be available for sale starting at 5 each evening and classroom visits will begin at 5:30. We’re looking forward to seeing you all that evening before we all take a break the following week.

Thank you for our Thursday treats and your support of our hardworking staff! We so appreciate family support. Please keep an eye out for more ways to chip in with your time, talent, or treasure - we have a few opportunities coming up soon, including some campus projects, fundraising, fieldwork, and other opportunities.

Happy spring! I hope you’re all enjoying the daffodils and other flowers as much as I am.

P.S. - a couple of dates to put on your calendar:

  • Earth Day celebration at Evergreen April 29th

  • end of grade testing for 3rd-8th grades - final two weeks of school

  • last day of school 6/12

  • first day back for families in the fall 8/20

Spirit Week / Pledge Week

The week leading up to Game Day is Spirit Week, see the theme days below. It is also Pledge Week! Show your support of Evergreen, of outdoor learning, of movement in education, of physical education, of expeditionary learning, of crew, of our fabulous educators, by donating and sharing.

Donations are tracked daily and classes have a chance to win a different prize each day!

You can register your student’s individual giving page by following the directions and link on our Tourney Page.

Volunteer Positions Added!

On Game Day, yes, we need folks to cheer and wave signs. But if you’re more reserved, maybe you want to set up a water station in the Gaga Pit, or be part of the Crew that makes sure that water station is always replenished.

Weekday commitments problematic? We will also need help pre-setting the field the afternoon of Sunday, March 17th.

Off the field you can share your pledge page widely and often!

If you do plan to attend, come in True Evergreen Fashion: make sure you’re ready to walk up the trail, and bring your lawn chair or blanket!

Community Fundraising

Right now, through March 1st Evergreen Community Charter School is extending 50% of all donations to Building Bridges.

Help us to support their vision, to address issues of race and racism, one conversation at a time, by contributing so that our community can offer this funding. Funds from this fund drive will be used to pay for Black expertise in the form of moderators, key note speakers, and presenters.

The perspectives that these presenters bring is often hard-won and they deserve more than our respect, they deserve compensation! Help Building Bridges pay more presenters for their knowledge and hard work.

No matter where you are in your work, you’ll benefit from their 9 week session coming up March 11th.

There are a lot of K-3 items this time. There are also a lot of lunch containers. So if you’re wondering where all your tupperware is… it may be in the closet…

City Council Candidate Forum

A sizable audience filled the gym for Monday night’s City Council Candidate Forum. Students asked some hard questions of the candidates. Students addressed everything from getting position statements on the proposed neighborhood development and the sidewalk that was promised between Beverly Rd and Bell Rd; to issues that affect the broader community, like houselessness, affordable homes, and sagging infrastructure.

If you missed it, you can watch the forum on our YouTube Channel.

Delayed gratification

Delayed gratification involves resisting the impulse to take an immediately available reward in the hope of gaining a more valued reward in the future. This ability to delay gratification is essential for mastering self-regulation and self-control. The Marshmallow Test was an experiment studying self-control and delayed gratification, first conducted over 40 years ago. In follow-up tests with the children over time, those who demonstrated self-control and were able to delay gratification had:

·         Better social skills
·         Less aggression
·         Better able to control emotional responses

·         Higher SAT scores
·         Lower levels of substance abuse
·         Better response/resiliency to stress

It’s not easy for parents to teach children delayed gratification in an instant gratification world, yet it feels more important than ever before. Along with the internet, smart technology has done something that is almost exclusively thought of as a good thing--it has eliminated the process of waiting. Google provides immediate answers at our fingertips, text messages provide quicker communication than waiting for someone to answer the phone–or worse–return your call, and marketing strategies entice consumers with quick, if not instantaneous, results (Think: get rich quick and lose weight fast just to name a couple). We’ve unintentionally found ourselves in a cultural standard that promotes and encourages “quick fixes” of all shapes and sizes, geared to minimize frustration, avoid any kind of discomfort, and expedite gratification. Sure, this sounds efficient and appealing on the surface, but research is showing that our increasingly technological world is actually inhibiting the development of one of THE MOST important skills and predictors of future success: delayed gratification.

The natural rewards of saving up, persevering, working hard, or accepting “no” now in exchange for a bigger (and better) “yes” later are great starting points for offering our kids more intentional opportunities to experience and understand the value of patience, delayed gratification, and self-control. Check out the video and articles below for more information on the benefits of delayed gratification and strategies to help your kids strengthen this fundamental skill.

Here at Evergreen, counselors play a critical role in our comprehensive and holistic education model by designing, facilitating, and evaluating learning opportunities that address the social, emotional, and academic well-being of all of our students. Here is a free learning opportunity our counselors recommend for parents or guardians of any age child/ren.

This event will take place March 14th in the Art Room, just off the gym.

We’re bringing Potlucks Back!

Curated by the Equity Leadership Team

Sunday, May 5th @ 4pm at Evergreen

We invite you to a space to build and reaffirm our Evergreen community.  Everyone is welcome, including children of all ages.  Simply bring a dish that means something to you or your family and be prepared to talk about it!

Food for us comes from our relatives, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. It has relationships.
