Girls On The Run Program Seeks Girls, and Coaches!

This is a program for3rd-5th grade girls both at Evergreen as well as schools that have partnered with EverAfter

We are looking for ONE MORE volunteer to “coach” our Evergreen Girls on the Run program. Lessons are already mapped out for you in terms of what you focus on at practice and there is very minimal prep. It is strictly volunteer based-no payment. To help incentivize parent coaches, we are offering a program fee discount for parents of participants who complete training and coach at least one practice each week.

Interested? Please fill out this Coach Application.  There is an in person training component, as well as online training for coaches and each site needs at least 2 trained coaches for 8-15 girls, and 3 trained coaches for up to 20 girls.

Celebrate School Counselors During National School Counseling Week

With the Director’s letter last week and The Scoop going out every Thursday this year, we realize we are a little late in celebrating with our wonderful Evergreen Community, but…HAPPY NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK!

Falling on the first full week of February every year, National School Counseling Week aims to spotlight the unique contributions of School Counselors to students, staff, and families within the educational setting. This week also highlights the many ways that students are positively impacted as a result of what school counselors do. As the field of school counseling has evolved over the years, research has shown that there are actually many common misconceptions about school counselors around  their role, services/programming, and even their competencies/qualifications. We hope the following links will provide more insight into who school counselors are, what they do, and where they fit into the equation for student success!

School Counselors Matter

Left: Annie Mast, K-4 Counselor,
Right: Hunter Holland, 5-8 Counselor

Here at Evergreen, Counselors play a critical role in our comprehensive and holistic education model by designing, facilitating, and evaluating learning opportunities that address the social, emotional, and academic well-being of all of our students. Evergreen’s counselors hold master’s degrees and licensure in mental health. With combined training, experience, and passion for supporting students, Evergreen’s School Counselors are an integral part of the school. They work with students individually, in small groups, and in whole class settings while also collaborating with teachers, administration, families, and community supports to ensure student needs are met. To learn more about Evergreen’s counselors and the counseling program, please visit Evergreen’s counseling page. Parents or community members with specific questions or concerns about the school counseling program may contact Annie (K-4) and Hunter (5-8). General information information can also be found on ASCA’s website: www.schoolcounselor.org.

EverGood Neighbors

The EARC (neighboring pool) occasionally allows our staff access to their parking lots during special events. We would love for this to continue. The trail that leads to the EARC parking lot should not be used unless that parking lot is being used during special events. Also, please do not allow children to climb on their signage or gates.

We have also noticed that people are not coming to a full stop at the bottom of the school’s driveway When exiting the school. There is no stop sign on the main road. This is dangerous to our neighbors who have the right of way.

Please help us be good neighbors by respecting the rules of the road, and our neighbor’s boundaries.

We invite you to join the upcoming session on Youth Substance Use, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS):

Evergreen School # 10713

February 1st, 2024

Hey Evergreen,

Somehow it’s already February and we have a bonus day this year!

The hallways are buzzing and busy as students are immersed in their expedition work and various projects, fieldwork, and service work. One happening in February is our 5th grade students are collecting donations for MANNA Foodbank. There are collection bins set up in Middle School and the Main Office. Give as you can, or consider how you could use your network to expand the collection beyond your own pantry. Speaking of pantries, we know these winter months can be especially hard. If you find yourself struggling to make ends meet this or any other month, please reach out to our Nutrition Director Sarah Shah, who keeps a pantry of staples on-hand. These are available to our families at any point. There is no paperwork to fill out, no need to explain or prove the need.

February is Black History Month, and students will be engaging in work to learn about the contributions and legacy of African Americans in this country. I’d encourage you all to learn and have family conversations - one good ongoing resource is the Anti-Racism Daily newsletter, and a February specific resource is their 28 Days of Black History series. I’ve been subscribing to the ARD newsletter for a while now, and really appreciate the thoughtful, digestible email every morning.

I also appreciated this reminder from today’s ARD newsletter:

“Celebrate Black History Month throughout the year.

The calendar might mark the occasion, but Black people deserve recognition and support 24/7, 365. Make the time this month to plan for how you're supporting Black history. As an individual, this can look like planning time to watch movies, or learn about a new leader each week. As a workplace, this can look like ensuring that your internal speaker series isn't just melanated in February, exploring other holidays related to Black culture, adding reminders to check specifically how your equity and inclusion initiatives support Black employees, and making an ongoing financial commitment.”

This month also marks the beginning of our Community Fundraising endeavors. For our Community Fundraiser we want to pair with organizations whose mission and vision are vital to our community and its growth and success. Building Bridges of Asheville is celebrating their 30th Year making just such a difference in Asheville. Their upcoming Spring Series, a 9-week session, encouraging us to explore race and racism one conversation at a time, begins March 11th. Many of our faculty, staff, and board members have been through this training and can attest to the impact it has had on their lives. We hope you’ll look into the training which happens over nine Mondays, here in our gym, and ending with a potluck.

Potlucks are also an Evergreen tradition, one we will be reviving in the coming month! Look for an email and more on that coming soon from one of our ELT team.

Thinking ahead a bit, here are a couple other important notes:

  • We are working on the 2024-2025 academic calendar, and the board will vote on it at the February meeting, so you will have that information soon

  • Graduation and Moving Up ceremony dates/times have been set

    • 6-8th grade Graduation and Moving Up Ceremony will be on June 11th from 6-7:30 in the Evergreen Gym

    • K-2 and 3-5 Moving Up Ceremonies will be on June 11th (3-5) and 12th (K-2) during the school day - more info to come on these

As always in winter, we will have delays or closings for inclement weather. We make our own decisions about closings/delays, and will communicate it through text, call, WLOS, and social media. We know families are coming to Evergreen from all parts of WNC, so if we are open but your area is not safe, make decisions that are right for your family and we will excuse absences/tardies accordingly!

Community Fundraising

Right now, through March 1st Evergreen Community Charter School is going to be extending 50% of all donations to Building Bridges of Asheville.

We want to support their vision: to address issues of race and racism, one conversation at a time, by offering this funding. Funds from this fund drive will be used to pay for black expertise in the form of moderators, key note speakers, and presenters.

The perspectives that these presenters bring is often hard-won and they deserve more than our respect, they deserve compensation! Help Building Bridges pay more presenters for their knowledge and hard work.

No matter where you are in your work, you’ll benefit from their 9 week session coming up March 11th. Learn more at: bbavl.org

Q.: How do I get involved?

A.: Be a cheerleader on or off the pitch! If you can make it that day: wonderful! You can sign up to be part of the cheer squad or a referee, or just be a smiling supportive face in the crowd! Off the field you can share your pledge page widely and often. You can ask your business if they’d like to sponsor the event. You can make signs or decorations for fans to wave!

FAQs:

Q: What is this?

A: It’s a Fundraiser. Many schools have your students hawk wrapping paper or popcorn or candy bars. Some pay an outside company to throw a fun-run, but the amount of waste generated at such events no longer sits well with our environmentally focused school. So a couple years ago, some of our students rewrote the rules, and this year, in honor of our 25th, we’re incorporating a beloved Evergreen tradition into the mix.

Q: Ok, but, how does this raise money?

A: Each student will receive a personal webpage for the fundraiser. Families can share the page’s url with extended family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, bowling team, those forever in your debt… and these folks can sponsor your child like they would for a fun run. Instead of pledging per mile, they can pledge per minute for 30 guaranteed minutes, or 60 minutes if they win their first match; or they can pledge a flat amount (this is most common).

Q: When does all this happen?

A.: March 11th-15th is Spirit Week / Pledge Week. Each day of pledge week grade levels will have a chance to win incentives based on percentage of grade level participation (vs dollar amount).

The Tournament itself will take place on the 18th.

Stay tuned for Tourney Schedule and the Staff vs. Guardians Pick-Up Game Sign-up.

Resources and Support for LGBTQIA+ Families & Children

Many parents reach out seeking guidance and resources to help support students who are questioning their gender and/or sexual identity. Questions about gender and sexuality are just one of the many facets that might be explored as children make sense of who they are and form their own sense of identity. For children to feel safe and empowered in this process, the most important factor is unconditional love and acceptance from family members. We’ve gathered some resources to help parents navigate the sometimes confusing or difficult conversations when a child is questioning, as well as additional information and local resources for supporting children who identify as LGBTQIA+.

For information about Rainbow Alliance, Evergreen’s GSA for students in 5-8, please reach out to Hunter, hunter.holland@evergreenccs.org. Note that out of respect for privacy and to ensure a safe space, individual names and identities of student members are not shared with individuals who are not in Rainbow Alliance.

Fifth Grade is Collecting Food Donations during the month of February

Beginning February 1st, Fifth Grade will be collecting donations for Manna Food Bank’s Annual Student Food Drive. Area schools compete to collect the most pounds of food to help those struggling with food insecurity. Financial donations, volunteer participation, and community engagement also count toward the school’s total donation weigh-in.

Please consider donating: Canned food (veggies, pasta sauce, etc.), Dry foods (cereal, rice, pasta, meal kits, etc.), Snacks (bars, fruit, apple sauce, etc.) Collection bins will be placed in the office, main entrance foyer, middle school hallway, and the 5/6 hallway. All unexpired, non-perishable food that is collected will be donated to the non-profit at the end of Feb.

Click here to be connected to resources.

Fifth Graders will be volunteering at Manna on Feb. 1st and Feb. 2nd. They invite you to sign up for volunteer opportunities as well. Please let the volunteer coordinator know you are with Evergreen Community Charter School.

There is also a representative coming on Tues. Feb 6th to speak with our students about Hunger/Nutrition/Food Insecurity in our community.

Please give what you can, or use the available resources if you need help! You can use the Food Finder link, above, or remember that Evergreen has a food pantry with resources available anytime you may need assistance, just ask at the front desk, or email Sarah Shah.

An infographic covers much of the information in the preceding paragraph, but with cartoon food and Manna Logos. Info not in the above paragraph: In WNC 1 in 4 children experience food insecurity! We need your help in the fight against hunger!

National Mentoring Month

January is National Mentoring Month and for most young people, a bond or even a conversation with someone who believes in them can make a tremendous difference in their lives, exposing them to new goals, new ideas, and new ways of doing things. Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity. Yet at least one in three young people will grow up without this critical asset. Our community is very fortunate that we have several amazing options for our youth. Check out these programs below!

Journeymen mentors adolescent males (ages 12-17) during their transformation to becoming men of integrity. Our mentors model authentic masculinity and nurture self-awareness and emotional growth, while challenging and assisting boys to discover their unique gifts. Our goal is to help male-identified youth step into new aspects of themselves, allowing an opportunity to let go of old patterns that no longer serve, while stepping into a new more integrated identity. We help teenage boys grow into authentic human beings.
