Meanders through Riparian Forest Buffers

This week RiverLink stopped by with their Stream Table as part of our Environmental Education program. Second and Fifth Grade got to interact with this demo as part of their Weather Expedition and Our Interdependent World Expedition, respectively. In the model, microplastics are used to approximate sediment and students got to experiment with building in a flood zone. Students learned about meanders, erosion, deposition, and riparian forest buffers. They placed communities on the land that they built and watched as the flood came. They got to see the difference in flooding between land with and land without the riparian buffer. And LOOK at this engagement!

meander (n.) - a winding curve or bend of a river or road.
erosion (v.) - the process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.
deposition (v.) - the action of depositing something. "The students observed the deposition of microplastics downstream."
riparian forest buffer (n.) - an area adjacent to a stream, lake, or wetland that contains a combination of trees, shrubs, and/or other perennial plants and is managed differently from the surrounding landscape, primarily to provide conservation benefits.

Earth Day at Evergreen

In some Native languages the term for plants translates to: those who take care of us.
— Robin Wall Kimmerer

For the past 25 years our Earth Day event has celebrated Evergreen’s ongoing environmental learning and action, through workshops and service learning opportunities. We highlight the importance of working together to create a more sustainable and just world for us all to live in together.

This work takes a village! Please look over the volunteer form to see how you can get involved. There are both on-site-day-of and remote opportunities.  Your support helps our day run smoothly! (and it’s really fun!)

$23,000 Evergreen Fund campaign

We need your help.

We need to raise $23,000 by the end of the school year.

As a NC charter school, we receive 25% less governmental funding than traditional public schools.

In honor of our 25th anniversary, consider creating a monthly or quarterly recurring gift of $25. Maybe a one time gift of $250.

Community support at all levels will help us reach our fundraising goal.

  • Pull all the way up to the back of the car in front of you.

  • Students should exit on the passenger side. If they are unable to, we urge you to pull around and park.

  • Have your child(ren) ready to go so they can get right out when you stop - if there is an issue and you need to assist your child, do not exit your vehicle, please pull around and park.

  • Stay in your car and let the traffic team help if your child needs it.

  • If your windows are tinted, it is hard to see whether that shadow is a kid or a canine. If you are needing help that is not coming, try rolling down a window.

Emotional Intelligence

Happy Spring Evergreen! We hope you all had a fun, restful, and restorative Spring Break! This week, we are sharing this wonderful Ted Talk: How to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Kids given by renowned Educator and Counselor, Lael Stone, whose passion is to “create wellness in families through connection and communication.”

This talk introduces the concept of Emotional Intelligence, or the ability to recognize, interpret, and process emotions in yourself and others. Our emotions impact our attention, memory, and learning capacities, our ability to cultivate relationships with others, and our physical and mental health. Research shows that children with high emotional intelligence experience more school engagement and higher grades, better attention, deeper empathy and compassion, and stronger peer relationships. They are also better able to communicate and regulate their own emotions.

As Lael explores the power of emotional intelligence through the lens of parenting, she shares her own personal revelation that, “children can’t be what they don’t see”, and how parents’ own emotional literacy can be a real superpower in raising strong, capable, emotionally intelligent children.

Cultural Disciples Book Club

The next Cultural Disciples Book Club will meet May 7th at 3:45pm, in the garden, weather permitting! Pick up your copy of Fire Keeper’s Daughter if you’d like to join in the conversation.

Auntie’s voice wraps me like a blanket. ‘Please be careful. Not every Elder is a cultural teacher, and not all cultural teachers are Elders. It’s okay to listen to what people say and only hold on to the parts that resonate with you. It’s okay to leave the rest behind. Trust yourself to know the difference’.
— A. Boulley

Psst… Grad Walk, May 10th @ 11am. Pass it on!

Each Spring we celebrate our Evergreen Alums who are graduating high school this year.

If you have any friends who fit this description, please make sure they’ve heard about the Grad Walk, May 10th @ 11am. We had an amazing turnout last year!

If you have any ideas of how to make this a special event for the alum, we welcome your suggestions/participation!

These graduates’ eighth grade year was cut short by covid, so a little extra love would be awesome.
