Growth Rings will be published monthly and will contain the material we will use to spark our conversations for growth in our community.

There will be two opportunities to join the conversations each month: The Parent Dialogue Series. We will try to vary the times for these events understanding that no one time can possibly fit all needs. This month the conversations are scheduled for:

Exciting News for Basketball Enthusiasts!

Get ready to lace up your sneakers because basketball registration is just around the corner! Starting today, November 9th, we're opening the doors to an incredible basketball season. Registration will begin for 8th graders this afternoon and gradually move down to the 7th and 6th grade students. Parents in these grade levels will receive an email notifying them that their child's grade level registration has gone live.

Mark your calendars because all the action will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:45-5:30. You'll find our dedicated coaches, Jeff and Andy, leading the way in practices and games. Their expertise and guidance promise a season of growth and unforgettable moments on the court.

For those registrants aspiring to make the varsity or junior varsity team, keep November 28th circled on your calendar as the date for tryouts. It's your chance to showcase your skills and earn a spot on either roster.

Introducing: The Culture Disciples, a Book Club on a Mission

This will be an Evergreen community reading group. Meaning both Evergreen staff and parents are more than welcome to join us.

Our first book is The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. We will host the meeting for this book on  Tuesday, December 12th at 4:00pm at the East AVL Library’s Community Room.

That's just in time to get the second book for holiday break reading! 'This Earth of Mankind' by Pramoedya Ananta Toer will be book #2. The meeting for this book will be early Feb (before our Feb break).  Our third book will be 'Fire Keeper's Daughter' by Angeline Boulley, with meeting date sometime in late March (before spring break). If you've already read some of these books, feel free to enjoy them again and join us when we meet for discussion and book-related snacks.

It's time, once again, for the Evergreen tradition of helping families within our community provide a more cheerful holiday! Any family can send us their child(ren)'s wishes, and Evergreen’s Ever Magical Elves will shop for the children of Evergreen!

  • Need some magic this season? Simply fill out this online Wish List  We have lots of givers, so please don't hesitate to let us know your child's wishes! All Giving Spirit wishes are kept anonymous, and the deadline for submissions is Nov. 24.

  • Click here if you would like to be a Magical Elf and provide a gift for an Evergreen child. We will send a list of wishes out on Nov. 24. Gifts need to be delivered unwrapped to Evergreen no later than Dec. 8.

The Effects of Too Much Screentime

It’s already November and that means the holiday season is quickly approaching. With all of that free time, I thought it would be important to look at our technology usage during the breaks.

You all are the first generation who have to figure out how to limit screen time for your kiddos. While digital devices can provide endless hours of entertainment and they can offer educational content, unlimited screen time can be harmful.

The Negative Effects of Too Much Screen Time

Whether you keep the TV on all the time or the whole family sits around staring at their smartphones, too much screen time could be harmful. Here's what some of the research says:

Sleep problems: Although many parents use TV to wind down before bed, screen time before bed can backfire. The light emitted from screens interferes with the sleep cycle in the brain and can lead to insomnia.

Behavior problems: Elementary school-age children who watch TV or use a computer more than two hours per day are more likely to have emotional, social, and attention problems.

Educational problems: Elementary school-age children who have televisions in their bedrooms do worse on academic testing.

Violence: Exposure to violent TV shows, movies, music, and video games can cause children to become desensitized to it. Eventually, they may use violence to solve problems and may imitate what they see on TV, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Obesity: Too much time engaging in sedentary activity, such as watching TV and playing video games, can be a risk factor for becoming overweight.

Establishing Family Rules With Electronics

Telling your child to turn off his video games while you're sitting in front of the TV won't do anyone any good. It's important for you to set healthy limits on your electronics use for your own sake, as well as your child's sake.

Here are a few household rules you might want to establish to curb screen time:

No digital devices during family meals.
No screen time in the car.
No screens allowed in bedrooms.
No electronics used during family fun nights.

In addition, consider an occasional digital detox for the whole family. Create a screen-free night once a week or commit to unplugging one weekend a month. It could be good for everyone's physical and emotional health, as well as your family's relationships.

Dear Evergreeners,

It was lovely to see so many of you last week at Fall Family Nights. Thank you for making time in your week to support your kiddos in their growth as scholars. The joyful and excited sounds emanating from classrooms and hallways show how your kids feel about learning, and the pride on their faces as they escorted you through their classrooms tells me everything I need to know: that this hard work we are doing together matters. 

Behind the scenes, our staff has been working hard in a different area as well - grappling with one of our school goals of creating a space where people feel a real sense of belonging and community. Our school community, at this juncture, feels safe for many but actually unsafe for some. It is clear that we have a lot of work to do in this area as a mostly white community and staff. Our focus as a staff is on digging into our culture and making real change to build a community that authentically supports, celebrates, and embraces various cultures and people. Some of the work that is happening includes:

  • Creating clear and transparent protocols for how we as a community will handle future racial incidents

  • Ensuring we are explicitly stating and focusing on our priorities and goals as a community

  • Creating a black student union to better support our black students and families

  • Exploring further options for staff learning through professional development, affinity group work, book clubs, discussion groups

  • Exploring partnerships with community organizations

This is mainly happening through faculty work groups and professional development work but all are invited to join this work through our Equity Leadership Team, parent discussion groups, book clubs (info coming soon!) and through your personal work. November parent dialogue sessions are scheduled for Nov 15th 12-1 (virtual) and Nov 17th 8:30-9:30 (in person). See next week’s Scoop for discussion topic, related readings, and rsvp link. Please join us in building a more authentic, welcoming community for all.

Bring your whole family and a picnic for some hang time with friends between runs on the track.  Non-bikers are invited to come cheer on the participants and enjoy each other's company.  Kolo has bike rentals for those who don't own a bike but who may want to enjoy the fun.

Invite anyone you know who may enjoy this event! Not limited to Evergreen families only.

All bike park entrance fees will be donated to the EVERGREEN 4th-grade class to help lower the price of their End-of-Year trip to Mountain Trail Outdoor School.

Cheer students on during our annual Halloween Parade! Students will take a lap around the field, weather permitting, and some classes will have other holiday activities during the day. Check class newsletters/ class coordinators’ emails for details.

Our school guidelines for costumes can be summed up with this handy rhyme: No Blood, No Gore, No Weapons of War. No culturally insensitive garb you might have to apologize for.
(And please follow dress code guidelines.)

Please send costumes with your student, there will be time to change before the parade.

Family Fun For Resilience: Ups and Downs Towers

“Ups and Downs Tower” is an interactive resilience-building activity using any kind of building blocks or other building materials. Gather materials from around the household that can stack. As you and your child construct the tower, discuss challenges, emphasizing how setbacks are like wobbles. Share stories of overcoming difficulties, then add challenges like gently blowing on the tower to depict obstacles. Celebrate resilience when the tower wobbles but stands, relating it to facing challenges. Keep building higher, adding more challenges, and reflect on lessons learned, linking them to real-life situations. The aim is to teach resilience as adapting and staying strong amid life’s challenges.

Fall Family Nights October 25-26. Grades K, 2, 4, and 6 will attend on October 25th, and Grades 1, 3, 5, and 7. Event will begin at 5 o’clock and run through 7 Thirty.

Fall Family Nights

Participating in Celebrations of Learning is part of the Evergreen curriculum. Having students evaluate and present their best work to the larger community gives our lessons and our expeditions more impact.

EVERAFTER closes early on these days. Please make arrangements to have your child signed out by 5:00pm.

The evenings start at 5:00pm. There will be tacos and drinks available for purchase in the gym. At 5:45pm there will be a musical presentation from Second Grade on Wednesday, and First Grade on Thursday. This will be followed by a short program and the unveiling of our new line of Evergreen Shirts.

At 6:30pm families will move into the classroom. Families are encouraged to explore older grades, or reminisce in past grade levels. Drop in to say hi to your favorite teachers, and make sure you check out the butterfly art installation in the Elementary Entryway.

Most, if not all, of our ‘vendors’ are cash only!

There are a number of fundraisers happening throughout the school. Let’s skip the transaction fees, and teach the student volunteers how to make change, by intentionally choosing cash. More details below!

Parking Notes

These events are quite large even with just half the school attending each night. Please reserve spaces nearest the school for families with mobility issues/infants and toddlers. Please plan to park in the lower lot and the looping lot. We will run a shuttle between the lower lot and the gym. But the main take-away: It will take some time to get to the gym from your parking spot, so please plan accordingly, be mindful of our neighbors, and park only in designated areas.

It's not just weather, trees are changing too. Color!
Leaves change to red
From the trees that are tall, leaves fall
Red, orange, yellow
Autumn orange leaves fall from the sky and glow on the ground
Leaf dot to dot
Bright crisp light shimmers through the trees
The look of those leaves and the weird smells
I like leaves falling, I like jumping into a leaf pile.
Although the leaves are falling on my head, I think, “it's amazing!”.
Everything calms down to prepare for Winter
I notice the changes in this time.
Changes.
Fall is a time that I can express myself.
As the Season of Scares begins, the streets are filled
with Jack O'Lantern grins…Halloween!
The leaves crunch
Cold wind blows
I feel so calm.

Honoring LGBTQ+ History Month

Did you know that October was LGBTQ+ History Month? A month-long celebration that was first recognized in the United States in 1994, when Rodney Wilson, an openly gay high school teacher from Missouri, passionately advocated for the idea of dedicating a month to honor gay and lesbian history. With the already established National Coming Out Day on October 11th, and the anniversary of the first March on Washington for gay and lesbian rights in 1979, October was chosen not only for its historical significance, but also because it’s a month when students are in school. 

The Evergreen community is always working towards a school culture and community that is inclusive, equitable, and supportive of students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification, economic status, physical and mental abilities, religious values, or political affiliations. Evergreen is excited to celebrate LGBTQ+ history throughout the month of October and to illuminate the voices of the students who this group represents through our Rainbow Alliance Club.

Please join us for a special $10 Evergreen Sunday Funday at Kolo Bike Park in the Adventure Center of Asheville! 

Bring your whole family and a picnic for some hang time with friends between runs on the track.  Non-bikers are invited to come cheer on the participants and enjoy each other's company.  Kolo has bike rentals for those who don't own a bike but who may want to enjoy the fun.

Invite anyone you know who may enjoy this event! Not limited to Evergreen families only.

All bike park entrance fees will be donated to the EVERGREEN 4th-grade class to help lower the price of their End-of-Year trip to Mountain Trail Outdoor School.

Grandparents, Friends & Folx Day is in November

Grandparents, Friends, & Folx Day is a day for your student to bring loved ones to school for a bit of reverse show and tell. Below is a form where you can identify the folks who mean the most (or who are most likely to be available) to join us for a fun day at Evergreen.
