Hi Evergreen,

Have you seen the amazing Tourney of the Hoops trophies in the office? The kids have been oohing and aahing over them all week. We are excited to share several events with you this month and we hope you can join us: coming up soon, the Tourney of the Hoops is replacing our Tree Trot fundraiser this year and the kids’ excitement is palpable. We need your help to make this day a success!

Recently, Planet Money did a piece about school fundraisers. Their reporter followed a school’s fundraising journey for a full year, watched outside companies come in to run corporate fundraisers, and wondered:

“Why do schools turn kids into little salespeople? Why do we let companies come in like this and dangle prizes in front of students?”

We used to be one of those schools. Our students actually made a presentation to the board contending that these fundraisers did not really align with our school values. We had to agree. It made us rethink the way we do fundraisers.

We want your donations to go to the school, not to “Mr. Cheesecake”. Doing things a little differently strengthens our kids intrinsic motivation. Yes, we still have incentives but they are experiential, not material.

Tomorrow we will have a short pep rally. No one will be chanting, "Big Money"! But we will be encouraging your students to activate and share their pledge pages, because the need stands. Because, the reality is, we do NEED your support to make our school run. So, as you see these requests coming in over the next week, consider donating just a teeny little bit more in support of doing things a little differently!

Right on the heels of the Tourney, we’ll be hosting all of you on the evenings of March 27th (1, 3, 5, 7/8) and 28th (K, 2, 4, 6) for our spring Exhibition Nights. Students are preparing to share their expedition work and learning with you. Family friendly food will be available for sale starting at 5 each evening and classroom visits will begin at 5:30. We’re looking forward to seeing you all that evening before we all take a break the following week. 

Thank you for our Thursday treats and your support of our hardworking staff! We so appreciate family support. Please keep an eye out for more ways to chip in with your time, talent, or treasure - we have a few opportunities coming up soon, including some campus projects, fundraising, fieldwork, and other opportunities.

The week leading up to Game Day is Spirit Week, see the theme days below. It is also Pledge Week! Show your support of Evergreen, of outdoor learning, of movement in education, of physical education, of expeditionary learning, of crew, of our fabulous educators, by donating and sharing.

Donations are tracked daily and classes have a chance to win a different prize each day!

Weekday commitments problematic? We will also need help pre-setting the field the afternoon of Sunday, March 17th.

Off the field you can share your pledge page widely and often!

If you do plan to attend, come in True Evergreen Fashion: make sure you’re ready to walk up the trail, and bring your lawn chair or blanket!

Part of every student’s expeditionary learning journey is participating in our bi-annual Celebrations of Learning! Exhibition Nights is the Spring Celebration of Learning. So save the date to come celebrate your child’s academic growth!

There will be food sales in the gym, and exhibits set up in the classrooms. As always, families are welcome to look in on other classrooms to see journeys to come, or revisit journeys past!

Culture Disciples Book Club - TODAY

Community Fundraising

Right now, through March 1st Evergreen Community Charter School is extending 50% of all donations to Building Bridges.

 
 

Help us to support their vision, to address issues of race and racism, one conversation at a time, by contributing so that our community can offer this funding. Funds from this fund drive will be used to pay for Black expertise in the form of moderators, key note speakers, and presenters.

The perspectives that these presenters bring is often hard-won and they deserve more than our respect, they deserve compensation! Help Building Bridges pay more presenters for their knowledge and hard work.

No matter where you are in your work, you’ll benefit from their 9 week session coming up March 11th.

City Council Candidate Forum

A sizable audience filled the gym for Monday night’s City Council Candidate Forum. Students asked some hard questions of the candidates. Students addressed everything from getting position statements on the proposed neighborhood development and the sidewalk that was promised between Beverly Rd and Bell Rd; to issues that affect the broader community, like houselessness, affordable homes, and sagging infrastructure.

Delayed gratification

Delayed gratification involves resisting the impulse to take an immediately available reward in the hope of gaining a more valued reward in the future. This ability to delay gratification is essential for mastering self-regulation and self-control. The Marshmallow Test was an experiment studying self-control and delayed gratification, first conducted over 40 years ago. In follow-up tests with the children over time, those who demonstrated self-control and were able to delay gratification had:

·         Better social skills
·         Less aggression
·         Better able to control emotional responses

·         Higher SAT scores
·         Lower levels of substance abuse
·         Better response/resiliency to stress


It’s not easy for parents to teach children delayed gratification in an instant gratification world, yet it feels more important than ever before. Along with the internet, smart technology has done something that is almost exclusively thought of as a good thing--it has eliminated the process of waiting. Google provides immediate answers at our fingertips, text messages provide quicker communication than waiting for someone to answer the phone–or worse–return your call, and marketing strategies entice consumers with quick, if not instantaneous, results (Think: get rich quick and lose weight fast just to name a couple). We’ve unintentionally found ourselves in a cultural standard that promotes and encourages “quick fixes” of all shapes and sizes, geared to minimize frustration, avoid any kind of discomfort, and expedite gratification. Sure, this sounds efficient and appealing on the surface, but research is showing that our increasingly technological world is actually inhibiting the development of one of THE MOST important skills and predictors of future success: delayed gratification. 

The natural rewards of saving up, persevering, working hard, or accepting “no” now in exchange for a bigger (and better) “yes” later are great starting points for offering our kids more intentional opportunities to experience and understand the value of patience, delayed gratification, and self-control. Don’t Miss Next Week’s City candidate Forum

To help eliminate barriers to engagement for busy parents childcare will be available

On Monday, February 19th beginning at 7:00 pm, Evergreen Middle School students, in partnership with the Haw Creek Community Association, will lead an Asheville City Council Primary Candidate Forum. The forum will be held in the gym at Evergreen Community Charter School with council candidates on the stage in front of a live audience, and it will be live streamed on the school’s Facebook page and the recording posted on Evergreen’s YouTube channel. It is important for all citizens of all ages to have the opportunity to ask questions of local leaders. Evergreen and the Haw Creek Community Association recognize that it may be hard for Asheville citizens with young children to come to events like these, so will be offering free childcare. Those interested in childcare may register here. General event registration can be found here.

A group of Evergreen’s 7th and 8th graders will introduce and ask questions of all of the candidates running to win a place on the ballot for Asheville City Council this fall. Students researched local issues, sought input from community members, and created questions that reflect issues of importance to the diverse population of Asheville. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to submit questions to the candidates. This is the only forum where the youth of Asheville get to ask questions of their prospective leaders and these middle schoolers bring unique perspectives to this event. After last fall’s forum, candidates called the event “the most thoughtful, well-researched forum [they] had attended”.

So far 7 of the 8 primary candidates have confirmed they will be present at the event. Six will move on after the primary to run for the 3 council seats up for grabs this fall.

If community is sharing knowledge, then we find that Building Bridge of Asheville has so much to contribute. Join us in this fundraiser for Building Bridges of Asheville, so their message can spread all over WNC.

The social environment that we currently live in incubates systemic, institutional, and opportunity gaps that are felt disproportionately by our BIPOC community members. Our WNC community at large can be all the better for everyone when we remove the wedge of inequity that currently exists between all of us. We need to move with intention and act in a sustainable compassionate way. Let’s dismantle the wedge that divides by sharing in conversation and inviting more people to the table.

Let’s work together to help fund this local organization with a beautiful vision, a strong mission, and values worthy of our support.

Gender Identity

Part of growing up is developing your gender identity. Whether you identify as cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary, finding where you belong on that continuum has been part of your development and your children are developing their gender identities as well.

Due to new legislation, gender identity is not part of the K-4 curriculum, but we hope you will take the time for these important discussions and learning about gender identity as a family. We know that gender identity and pronouns can be confusing and unfamiliar, so we invite you to come into community to learn, or to share how we can support ALL of our students, no matter their sex or gender.

Spirit Week: March 11-15th

The Week before the Tourney is Spirit Week!

Students and teachers dress up and enjoy getting goofy. Students encourage family and friends to pledge so that they have a chance to win incentives each day! Our incentives this year are all experiential, no plastic tchotchke, no items to construct!

We calculate the winners by pledge participation percentages vs. dollar amounts, so that everyone can participate and (and win) without breaking the bank.

We have heard parent pleas and we hope you find each theme day fairly laid back and easy to accomplish without buying or constructing elaborate get-ups. See the graphic below for your Spirit Week Dress Up Days and Incentives.

On Game Day grades 3-8 will need to show up in their team color! We will be ordering shirts for the winners once those are determined. K-2 and Game Refs will have shirts provided for Game Day!

  • 3rd & 6th Grade - Blue!

  • 4th & 7th Grade - Green!

  • 5th & 8th Grade - Red!

Be a cheerleader on or off the pitch!

If you can make it on March 18th: wonderful! You can sign up to be part of the cheer squad or a referee, or just be a smiling supportive face in the crowd!

Off the field you can share your pledge page widely and often. You can make signs or decorations for fans to wave!

Dealing with Lying:
Age Appropriate Strategies for Developmental Stages

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, children and adults lie for similar reasons: to get out of trouble, for personal gain, to impress or protect someone, or to be polite. At a young age, kids will experiment with the truth and continue doing so through all the developmental stages, with varying degrees of sophistication and elaboration.

As the primary role models in children's lives, parents and caregivers play a vital part in showcasing honesty. They also have the most influence on instilling a deep-rooted commitment to telling the truth. As children mature and acquire a more sophisticated understanding of social etiquette, parents must help children differentiate between little white lies told to spare people's feelings and downright dishonesty.

For maximum influence at each developmental stage, address the subject of lying in an age-appropriate way. Check out these listed resources and articles to learn age appropriate techniques to support your child in choosing honesty.

When To Keep Your Child Home From School

Straight from the nurse’s desk, here is a list of symptoms to screen for, and how long to wait after symptoms subside before re-entering the school setting.

Civics in Action: Middle Schoolers to host City Council candidate Forum in february

Three seats are up for election. The candidates running include:

Girls On The Run Program Seeks Girls, and Coaches!

This is a program for3rd-5th grade girls both at Evergreen as well as schools that have partnered with EverAfter. 

We are looking for ONE MORE volunteer to “coach” our Evergreen Girls on the Run program. Lessons are already mapped out for you in terms of what you focus on at practice and there is very minimal prep. It is strictly volunteer based-no payment. To help incentivize parent coaches, we are offering a program fee discount for parents of participants who complete training and coach at least one practice each week.

Interested? Please fill out this Coach Application.  There is an in person training component, as well as online training for coaches and each site needs at least 2 trained coaches for 8-15 girls, and 3 trained coaches for up to 20 girls.

Tourney of the Hoops - March 18th

This year Winners of Round One and Two will be winning the 2024 Tourney of the Hoops official T-Shirt. We thought it might add a bit of stakes to the games, and pride in the t-shirt if it was won vs given.

Grades K-2 will still receive a t-shirt for participation, and everyone will be receiving another surprise small token for participating. T-shirts will also be available for sale this year for anyone who wants one!

On Game Day grades 3-8 will need to show up in their team color! We will be ordering shirts for the winners once those are determined, but K-2 and Game Refs will have shirts for Game Day!

  • 3rd & 6th Grade - Blue!

  • 4th & 7th Grade - Green!

  • 5th & 8th Grade - Red!

Be a cheerleader on or off the pitch! If you can make it that day: wonderful! You can sign up to be part of the cheer squad or a referee, or just be a smiling supportive face in the crowd! Off the field you can share your pledge page widely and often. You can ask your business if they’d like to sponsor the event. You can make signs or decorations for fans to wave!

With the Director’s letter last week and The Scoop going out every Thursday this year, we realize we are a little late in celebrating with our wonderful Evergreen Community, but…HAPPY NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK! 

Falling on the first full week of February every year, National School Counseling Week aims to spotlight the unique contributions of School Counselors to students, staff, and families within the educational setting. This week also highlights the many ways that students are positively impacted as a result of what school counselors do. As the field of school counseling has evolved over the years, research has shown that there are actually many common misconceptions about school counselors around  their role, services/programming, and even their competencies/qualifications. We hope the following links will provide more insight into who school counselors are, what they do, and where they fit into the equation for student success!

Here at Evergreen, Counselors play a critical role in our comprehensive and holistic education model by designing, facilitating, and evaluating learning opportunities that address the social, emotional, and academic well-being of all of our students. Evergreen’s counselors hold master’s degrees and licensure in mental health. With combined training, experience, and passion for supporting students, Evergreen’s School Counselors are an integral part of the school. They work with students individually, in small groups, and in whole class settings while also collaborating with teachers, administration, families, and community supports to ensure student needs are met. EverGood Neighbors

The EARC (neighboring pool) occasionally allows our staff access to their parking lots during special events. We would love for this to continue. The trail that leads to the EARC parking lot should not be used unless that parking lot is being used during special events. Also, please do not allow children to climb on their signage or gates.

We have also noticed that people are not coming to a full stop at the bottom of the school’s driveway When exiting the school. There is no stop sign on the main road. This is dangerous to our neighbors who have the right of way.

Please help us be good neighbors by respecting the rules of the road, and our neighbor’s boundaries.

The North Carolina Department of Justice (NC DOJ) is working hard to keep kids safe. Youth today face a variety of challenges – some that may be familiar to parents and many that simply did not exist in generations past, before fentanyl, cell phones, and social media. To help support parents, caregivers, and people who work with children and youth, NCDOJ launched a webinar series: Protecting the Next Generation of North Carolinians.

According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, in the last month 65,000 (8.14%) North Carolinians aged 12 to 17 report using drugs, and 9.17% report using alcohol. What is more, since their introduction in 2011, rates of youth e-cigarette use in North Carolina have steadily increased, impacting 20.9% of high school students and 6.1% of middle school students in 2019.
