Celebrating our Girls on the Run Program!

Girls on The Run completed the 8 week program with a 5k on May 5th.

In addition to completing the run, the team also participated in a community impact project and created bracelets of love for pediatric patients. The bracelets were donated to Mission Children's Hospital. A bracelet will be left on the pillow of new patients to express love and compassion from our community.

End of Year Testing and Test Anxiety

This week we are going to talk about TESTS! As many of us know, testing can cause us all different types of stress and anxiety. And this is even more true for students. When students experience test anxiety they are actually experiencing a type of performance anxiety. Performance anxiety is when we feel the pressure to do well in a certain situation where performance counts towards something. When we’re feeling this way we may experience some physical symptoms like butterflies in our stomach, increased heart rate, or feeling sweaty and shaky. This anxiety is a result of anticipating something stressful and it can affect our mind and body. When we experience stress our body releases the hormone adrenaline, which prepares us for our fight or flight response. A little bit of stress can help us focus and actually perform better. But too much stress can lead to overwhelm and get in the way of what we need to do.

So how can we help our students combat test anxiety? Here are some helpful things that students can add to their routine to avoid feeling those nervous feelings before a big test:

  • Practice good study habits

  • Create a pretest routine

  • Practice relaxation techniques

  • Be sure to hydrate and nourish your body with food

  • Get enough sleep

  • Speak with a teacher if you feel nervous

  • Accept mistakes and be gentle with yourself

When we think that we can’t do something or are not going to do well, it often causes our anxiety to increase. We want our students to feel capable and confident when it comes to test taking and other challenging situations they will face. It is important to encourage our students to have a healthy mindset when it comes to performance anxiety. Changing the way we think about tests and academic performance can influence the way we perform. By helping students look at the bigger picture and helping them change their perspective surrounding tests, we can lessen the stress surrounding these events. By focusing on progress versus perfection, students are better able to bounce back from stressful tests and fear of failure. Here are some test-taking strategies that may be helpful for your student when it’s time to perform:

  • Set aside enough time to study independently or with a group of classmates. Over-studying can lead to burnout and causes you to forget the information

  • Go to bed early the night before the test - getting good sleep will help you be productive on test day

  • Read through the whole exam before answering any questions

  • You do not have to start on the first question

  • Use the process of elimination for multiple-choice questions where you are unsure of the answer

  • Try to focus on the test for the majority of the time - try not to let your mind wander

  • Show all of your work for problem-solving questions

  • Don’t be afraid to raise your hand if you have a question or if something is unclear

-and most importantly, remember– a test is just one measure of learning! There are so many other ways that students can demonstrate and celebrate their skills. Encourage them to focus not on the test grade, but on putting in their best effort.

Evergreen's Staff Appreciation Week is Happening May 13-17!

In appreciation of all our Evergreen teachers and staff do to enrich the lives of  our children, the week of May 13-17 will have some special days (full of food and caffeine) in their honor.

Nationally, most schools celebrate this week, but with our End of Year Trip schedule that would mean 3 grade levels would be left out! Below are the ways we have planned to celebrate teachers with the help of some generous local sponsors. Read through to see how you can contribute to this annual Appreciation-Fest!

Week's Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

Monday, May 13:

Starting the week off right! Coffee in the staff lounge from Round Earth Roasters.

Tuesday, May 14:

Notes and/or Flower for Teachers

Please have your child bring in a handwritten note and/or flower to their teacher.
Don’t forget enrichment teachers, supplemental staff, admin and office who make a difference in your child’s day!

Wednesday, May 15:

Catered Lunch Day for Staff

Black Orthodontics is once again sponsoring a catered lunch for our staff (11-2pm). We thank them again for bringing bright smiles our way!

Thursday, May 16:

Gifts of Abundance – Please consider making a small monetary contribution for your teacher and assistant to your classroom coordinator for teacher/assistant gifts. Your classroom coordinator will be sending an email regarding this.

Please also consider helping out with gifts of abundance for enrichment teachers and other staff to make sure they feel appreciated as well. Parents are also welcome to give these directly to our enrichment staff individually. Sometimes we get questions about what other staff besides the lead and associate teachers are helping out in the classrooms. Here is a link to the Teachers & Staff page of the website. Differentiated Services are those teachers who also help out in classrooms with various students.

Classroom Coordinators: Contact Susan Haldane in the office if you need your parent email list. Please remember to bcc: when sending to your group.

Friday, May 17:

FroZen Monkey treats for staff at the end of the day.

If you have any questions, feel free to email Kellam.

Thanks again for your support of Evergreen teachers and staff,

The Evergreen Teacher Appreciation Committee

Grad Panel Judges Needed June 6th!

Dear Evergreen Community,

We have reached the time of year when 8th grade students are hard at work crafting their graduation portfolios and gearing up for their panel presentations. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on their experiences, growth, and future. As a volunteer judge, you see first hand the amazing humans that graduate from Evergreen and learn about their journey.  Any former judge will tell you, it is an impressive insight to the student experience of Evergreen.

We are seeking community members who are willing to join us to watch and evaluate student presentations.

Our Graduation Panel Event is scheduled for Thursday, June 6th from 5:00pm-8:30pm in middle school classrooms.  There will be a judges training from 5:00pm-5:25pm  in the Multipurpose Room prior to the presentations. Dinner, refreshments, and snacks will be provided.

Schedule:
Between 4:45-5:00 Judges arrive in lower middle school hallway
5:00-5:25- Judges training for ALL judges
5:30-8:30- Student Presentations

If you would like to join us as a judge, please sign up HERE by May 15th.

We want the focus to be on celebrating each student's unique accomplishments while also providing them feedback on their presentations.  Your role as a “judge” will be to watch a series of student presentations (4-5), ask questions, and fill out a rubric for each student.

More specific information will be provided to those that sign up.  Thank you all for supporting this wonderful group of 8th graders!

What is GiveButter?

If you’re a regular or occasional donor you’ve seen just how antiquated our old donor software was. And expensive!

We’re done churning out tired old campaigns, so we’re switching to a provider who offers better tools to improve our experience, and yours. And it’s free for the school, meaning more of your donation goes where it should: to the teachers and programs we all love.

What does this mean for you?

Folks with recurring gifts, please take a moment to switch your donation over. It’s a fairly simple procedure:

Need help? We’re happy to walk you through it over the phone or in the Development Office! You can give Susan a call at (828) 298-2173 ext 1216

Meet Fairy Butter. This whimsical snack has just 4 ingredients, and would be a fun spring treat to make with your fanciful child.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May can feel overwhelming for everyone here at Evergreen. End of year trips, end of grade testing, and final wrap up tasks take up much of our time. Meanwhile we are also squeezing in end of year celebrations for accomplishments and making it through another school year! During a month that can sometimes feel mind-boggling, it seems fitting that May is also Mental Health Awareness Month!

Even in our busiest season, it is good to remember to focus on the importance of mental health and its impact on our well-being. Mental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, or income level. The good news is… mental health conditions are treatable. The more we talk about mental health together, the more normalized these conversations become – ultimately empowering people to seek the help they need.

Consider taking the opportunity this month to check in with your children about how they are doing. Maybe share your experience of how you are caring for your mental health. Help enforce the message that, “it’s okay to not be okay”, and encourage them to seek help when they need it.

Here is a great article focused on How to Talk to Your Kids About Their Mental Health with an included coloring and activity book.

Here is a resource for Mental Health Awareness Month that has how to access care, a crisis toolkit, and information about anxiety and kids.  Additional Parent and Caregiver resources on the mental health of children can be found here.

May 2nd, 2024

Hi Evergreen families,

Somehow it’s May, and we’ve officially reached the point in the year where time just goes faster and faster until summer arrives in a whirlwind of end of year celebrations, bittersweet graduation ceremonies, staff transitions, and vacation excitement.

Our Earth Day celebration this week was a joyful celebration of community, learning, and service and we have so much gratitude to our Environmental Education program coordinator, Marin Leroy, for the many hours she spent planning and overseeing the day. If you did not get a chance to volunteer, check out the gallery below for llamas, flowers, and mud!

Looking forward in this month, we have a flurry of events: middle school’s Talent Show, Grad Walk, our Annual Meeting on May 16th, end of year assessments and standardized tests among many other things.

Did you know that you can add the Evergreen calendar to your phone with a couple of really simple steps? Just think of all the time you’ll save not having to add Evergreen events to your calendar! Here’s a quick tutorial: from your phone (or desktop, if you prefer), go to the calendars page of the Evergreen website. Check out the google calendar, and when you see the tiny +Google Calendar button on the bottom right of the calendar, click it. It will open your calendar app and prompt you to add the calendar. And from then on, you’ll have Evergreen events at your fingertips without the extra work of adding them!

Switching gears for a minute, I do want to raise awareness that North Carolina’s general assembly has convened for their short session of the year. More than ever, I hope you will take some time to learn about bills that are being discussed and use your voices to advocate for funding for public education and teachers in North Carolina.

This week is Volunteer Appreciation Week! Volunteers are such an integral part of the very conception and founding of Evergreen. And 25 years on, our parent volunteers are still such an important part of what makes Evergreen a *Community* Charter School. Thank you for showing up for our students, for our teachers, and for our staff. We value the time, we value the investment, we value you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for each act of kindness, each banana muffin, each event eased, each paper graded, each garden nurtured!

next monday is Earth Day at Evergreen

In some Native languages the term for plants translates to: those who take care of us.
— Robin Wall Kimmerer

For the past 25 years our Earth Day event has celebrated Evergreen’s ongoing environmental learning and action, through workshops and service learning opportunities. We highlight the importance of working together to create a more sustainable and just world for us all to live in together.

This work takes a village! Please look over the volunteer form to see how you can get involved. There are both on-site-day-of and remote opportunities.  Your support helps our day run smoothly! (and it’s really fun!)

May 4th Work Day

We need work day volunteers to tie the bow on any projects left unfinished after Earth Day!

Come play in the gardens, on the trail, and all around campus!

We’re bringing Potlucks Back!

This well-loved clipping from a magazine (?) is from my mother’s little metal recipe box. It now lives in my phone.

Sunday, May 5th @ 4pm at Evergreen

We invite you to a space to build and reaffirm our Evergreen community.  Everyone is welcome, including children of all ages.  Simply bring a dish that means something to you or your family and be prepared to talk about it!

Reuben Loaf

- Lynni Meador

Food traditions are all about what we deem worth keeping. Right now we are building food traditions for our families. One day, they’re going to call home looking for ways to reproduce their faves.

The first recipe I called home looking for was the Reuben Loaf. I think of it as a family recipe even though, if you look closely at the recipe, it clearly came from Fleischmann's Yeast Co.

We didn't have a lot of money when we were growing up and this recipe stretched in all the right places. We didn't always use corned beef, sometimes our reubens were rachels- meaning we used turkey, or in a super not-kosher move: ham! Whatever lunch meat or cheese we had on hand went in. Sometimes it would be half one meat, half another. Sometimes it was split in thirds - a meal and a lesson in fractions.

I had always assumed that the Rueben Sandwich perhaps sprang from this 'more traditional dish'. That it originated in Eastern Europe, that it was German, that it was Jewish. But actually, the sandwich came first, and as for the rest of my assumptions: yes, sort of. I did some googling and found that: ”the Reuben is a deeply early-20th-century American Midwestern creation, a Jewish sandwich that isn't kosher, made by an assimilated Eastern European whose family left Russia, Poland, and Germany several generations before World War II”.  Making it a truly American creation: assimilated, argued over, adapted, and… delicious.

I hope you’ll sign up to share a food story through the Passports Potluck. I want to know what you deemed worth keeping.

$23,000 Evergreen Fund campaign

We need your help.

We need to raise $23,000 by the end of the school year.

As a NC charter school, we receive 25% less governmental funding than traditional public schools.

In honor of our 25th anniversary, consider creating a monthly or quarterly recurring gift of $25. Maybe a one time gift of $250.

Community support at all levels will help us reach our fundraising goal.

  • Pull all the way up to the back of the car in front of you.

  • Students should exit on the passenger side. If they are unable to, we urge you to pull around and park.

  • Have your child(ren) ready to go so they can get right out when you stop - if there is an issue and you need to assist your child, do not exit your vehicle, please pull around and park.

  • Stay in your car and let the traffic team help if your child needs it.

  • If your windows are tinted, it is hard to see whether that shadow is a kid or a canine. If you are needing help that is not coming, try rolling down a window.

Election Run-offs - May 14th

We will have voters on campus again in May 14th. Voting will be taking place in the Art Room. There will be extra traffic on campus during this time.

You can find more information about this runoff election at the Buncombe County Board of Elections site.

Making Informed Choices with Media and Technology

We’ve been hearing from parents about their increasing concerns with all the forces of media out there, particularly as our kids age. The top questions I get from parents these days are all surrounding technology and media. How do I protect my kid from negative media? How much screen time is too much screen time? Is this game too violent? When should I get my kid a phone? What apps are dangerous or helpful? What parental control options are available? Is this TV show ok for my kid?

It is important that caregivers monitor media exposure for kids of all ages. Pro-use, violent and hypersexualized messages abound, are easily found, and are increasingly (and literally) right at their fingertips. Limit and discuss the use of devices and apps to mitigate the addictive aspects of technology.

Your go-to resource for info on all of the above is Common Sense Media. A one-stop place to get media reviews, resources, research, and coaching. Check out their family tech planners to craft a Family Media Plan. They have different recommendations based on developmental stages and ages, and worksheets to help you put together a plan that fits your family.

Auntie’s voice wraps me like a blanket. ‘Please be careful. Not every Elder is a cultural teacher, and not all cultural teachers are Elders. It’s okay to listen to what people say and only hold on to the parts that resonate with you. It’s okay to leave the rest behind. Trust yourself to know the difference’.
— A. Boulley

Psst… Grad Walk, May 10th @ 11am. Pass it on!

Each Spring we celebrate our Evergreen Alums who are graduating high school this year.

If you have any friends who fit this description, please make sure they’ve heard about the Grad Walk, May 10th @ 11am. We had an amazing turnout last year!

If you have any ideas of how to make this a special event for the alum, we welcome your suggestions/participation!

These graduates’ eighth grade year was cut short by covid, so a little extra love would be awesome.
