Dine Out For Evergreen

A huge thank you to Evergreen parent and Universal Joint GM, Mike Kovitch, for arranging a fundraiser for Evergreen March 21-23.

If you haven’t experienced the U Joint yet, now’s the time! They’ve been serving fantastic create your own burgers, along with salads and sandwiches (and don’t forget those tater tots!!) since opening in 2009.

It’s a great dog friendly neighborhood hub in West Asheville with a fantastic outdoor patio. So far, the weather is looking great. So, stop by for lunch or dinner (or both) March 21-23 for great food for a great cause.

Let’s celebrate the first weekend of Spring by playing and dining in walkable West Asheville over the course of the weekend!

Saturday morning 10-Noon families are invited to bring out your bikes or your lawn games, and come let the kids play at Malvern Hills Park before heading over to the UJ for Lunch!

Sunday morning from 10-Noon families are invited to West Asheville’s Gassaway Park for a pick-up Kickball Game, or to hang at the playground! Gassaway Park is just at the end of Vermont Ave, so it’s super walkable to The UJ and the rest of West AVL.

Join a meetup, or simply stop by The UJ March 21st-23rd to support the school and an Evergreen Community Business during this delicious fundraiser!

Tourney of the Hoops Spring Fundraiser

In just 2 weeks, we’ll kick off our Tourney of the Hoops Fundraiser and a full school Spirit Week on March 24th! Our goal is to raise $50,000. This money helps our school reconcile the actual cost of educating our children in a meaningful way versus what we receive from local, state, and federal bureaus to do so, and strengthens our school community.

This year, fundraising is more critical than ever to provide learning resources and fund our school budget. If your family is not in the position to financially support the school, that’s ok. Evergreen Families can actually support our school by also SHARING about our fundraiser with friends and family online.

Here’s what all students can get excited about:

Spirit Week! Middle School is planning an exciting Spirit Week that maximizes fun while minimizing stress for parents by choosing themes that do NOT necessitate purchases/elaborate preparations.

Game Day! Grades 3-8 will be playing Capture The Hoops, a unique Evergreen tradition, Grades K-2 will be enjoying a Hoopy Loopy Dance Party in the Gym! This high-energy event will give our students a much needed boost of fun!

Planting a class tree! Thanks to Asheville Greenworks, grade levels that meet their grade level goal of $5500 will have a tree planted on campus in their honor. These trees are the first step in restoring the precious canopy that was lost here on campus, and in our region.

Western North Carolina lost so much tree cover due to Helene. This video is a great reminder of what makes our region so special and what is at stake due to this massive loss of habitat.

Tourney of the Hoops Spring Fundraiser

In just 4 weeks, we’ll kick off our Tourney of the Hoops Fundraiser and a full school Spirit Week on March 24th!

We’re partnering with our friends at Givebutter to power our fundraiser to make it more profitable, fun, and easy for everyone. When you give you’ll see an option to TIP Givebutter, this is absolutely unnecessary and does not go toward the school. We do love the Givebutter platform though as it keeps more money here in our community.

Fostering Perseverance and Resilience in Children & Teens

In today’s world, we are noticing that more children seem to struggle with resilience—the ability to persevere through challenges, recover from setbacks, and adapt to change. Research suggests that modern parenting trends, increased screen time (which effectively limits unstructured play), and a culture that discourages failure and discomfort all contribute to this rising issue among our youth. When children aren’t given opportunities to struggle, make mistakes, and navigate new experiences, they miss out on skillbuilding opportunities that are essential for personal growth and self-efficacy. As a result, many kids are finding themselves in a state of resistance, fear [of failure], or emotional overwhelm when faced with tasks or experiences they perceive as challenging, and may even begin to avoid anything other than the familiar altogether.

As parents, it’s understandable to want to protect our children from frustration, discomfort, or fear and it is natural to want to help them feel better when they are struggling with something. These are big pieces of our role as parents and caregivers! Being available to guide our children through the challenges of life is important. However, if we "over-do" for them—fixing problems too quickly, shielding them from discomfort, stepping in before they have a chance to try, or even avoiding experiences entirely because of our own worries and discomforts—we unintentionally hinder their growth and rob them of the chance to develop important coping skills.

Finding a healthy balance between offering support and stepping back is a delicate parenting dance. It’s about knowing when to hold their hand and when to let them find their own footing, even if it means navigating a few stumbles along the way. Resilience isn’t built overnight, but small shifts in how we support our children can make a lasting impact. By allowing them to make mistakes, face challenges, and embrace new experiences, we empower them to grow into confident, capable individuals who believe in their own ability to handle life’s challenges.

Tips & Strategies for Fostering Resilience and Perseverance:

Encourage problem-solving instead of rescuing – Instead of rushing to fix difficulties, resist the urge to jump in. Ask guiding questions like, “What could you try next?”

Normalize struggle – Share your own challenges and how you work through them. Model flexibility and thoughtful self-reflection.

Allow room for failure – Let kids experience setbacks or disappointments and coach them through processing their emotions and trying again. Safe, age-appropriate risks help kids develop confidence and independence.

Limit screen time in favor of real-world exploration – Free, unstructured play allows kids to experiment, take risks, and learn problem-solving naturally. And don’t forget to get outside!

Reframe mistakes as learning opportunities – Instead of focusing on avoiding errors, encourage kids to see mistakes as stepping stones to growth. Ask, “What did you learn? What will you do differently next time?”

Embrace new experiences – Remember: Growth happens outside of our comfort zones. Whether it’s an overnight trip, a new hobby, or a social event, encourage your child to step into new situations—even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

Manage your own anxiety – If you find yourself holding your child back from an experience, ask: “Am I protecting them, or am I soothing my own fears?” If you tend to intervene quickly, pause and ask yourself, “Am I helping my child grow, or am I easing my own discomfort?”

Absenteeism, Avoidance, & Assistance

As we journey through the school year, we recognize that some of our students face unique challenges that may affect their attendance and overall engagement in school. Among these challenges, anxiety can play a significant role in absenteeism or avoidance behaviors. Our goal is to provide support and resources to help both you and your child navigate these difficulties successfully.

Understanding Anxiety-Related Absenteeism

Anxiety can manifest in various ways, and for some children, the thought of going to school can be overwhelming. This can lead to school avoidance, where children may refuse to attend school due to feelings of fear, worry, or distress about situations they may encounter there. Understanding the root causes of this anxiety is crucial to addressing the issue effectively.

Signs of School-Related Anxiety

Being aware of the signs can help you identify if your child is struggling with anxiety. Common signs include:

  • Reluctance or refusal to go to school

  • Frequent complaints of physical symptoms like stomachaches or headaches

  • Increased clinginess or need for reassurance before school

  • Difficulty concentrating on schoolwork or feeling overwhelmed in class

  • Changes in mood or behavior, such as irritability or sadness

Tips for Supporting Your Child

Here are some strategies that may help your child manage their anxiety and improve their school attendance:

Open the Lines of Communication: Encourage your child to express their feelings and fears about school. Listening without judgment can help them feel supported.

Establish a Routine: Consistent morning and bedtime routines can provide your child with a sense of stability and security. Predictability can help reduce anxiety.

Gradual Exposure: If your child is avoiding school, consider a gradual reintroduction. Start with short visits or partial days to help them acclimate to the school environment.

Reinforce Positive Behavior: Celebrate small victories and progress. Positive reinforcement can boost your child's confidence and motivate them to face their anxiety.

Teach Coping Strategies: Help your child develop coping skills, such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or positive self-talk, which they can use when feeling anxious.

Connect with School Staff: If your child is struggling, do not hesitate to reach out to their teacher or school counselor. They can provide additional support and resources tailored to your child’s needs.

Professional Help: If anxiety persists or significantly impacts your child’s daily life, consider seeking professional help. Therapists or counselors can work with your child using specialized techniques that can greatly alleviate anxiety symptoms. Please reach out if you need help finding a therapist for your child.

Join the Board!

Interested in joining the Evergreen Board of Directors? Applications are now open!

First year Board members typically give 10 hours a month of service. As Board members move into leadership roles in the second and third years, Board members give about 15-25 hours a month.

To be considered for 2025-2026 recruitment season, please submit your application by February 28, 2025.

Board applications remain active for two consecutive academic years. For example, applications submitted in January 2025 are eligible for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 year. After that, a new application must be submitted to be considered.

Spotlight: PODER Emma

“Emma residents have a deep love for where we live, and PODER Emma and partner grassroots organizations have been working for more than a decade to build deep relationships, strengthen leadership skills and capacity in ourselves and our neighbors, and to cultivate a sense of place, belonging, identity and culture. Over the years we have created community solutions to problems in our neighborhood that have created a collective belief that when community comes together we can improve our lives for ourselves and future generations.

As the City of Asheville rapidly develops, many communities are facing accelerated displacement.  The community relationships, trust, infrastructure and resources that have been built by neighbors is at risk being lost, particularly due to the vulnerability of mobile home residents who have seen the replacement of mobile home parks with condominiums and commercial properties across the county.  This is why we focus on community controlled economic development, local policy advocacy and cultural work to protect our community.”

Last week a group of middle school students helped EverAfter Director, James, load up the remaining pallets of water to be delivered to PODER Emma.
